This policy explains what Benedict John Feole ("Sortr", "we") collects when you use sortr.online, why, and the choices you have. The short version: no person ever looks at your photos, and we never keep them.
Your photos
- Your full-size photos and videos never leave your computer.
- To sort a photo, your browser makes a small preview (about 512 pixels). The preview passes through our server to our AI provider, OpenAI, which looks at it automatically. It is sent without your name, email or account details.
- We don't store previews. Each one is used once to choose a folder and a file name, then discarded. We ask OpenAI not to store it; OpenAI may keep requests for up to 30 days only to monitor for abuse, then deletes them, and does not use them to train its models.
- For video, the same happens with a single frame from the middle of the video.
- If you choose "Auto Sort", nothing extra is sent: folders are chosen from a fixed list.
What we collect and keep
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address | To sign you in and send your receipts |
| Sign-in codes (stored in scrambled form, for 10 minutes) | To check the code you enter |
| Your folder names and notes | To sort your photos into them |
| Messages you send in the Sortr chat, and its replies | To answer you; cleared when you start a new sort |
| Plan, payment and card-hold records (amount, plan, date, Stripe reference) | Billing, receipts and support |
| Sorting progress: how many photos, when you last sorted, the AI-made name and folder of the last photo, and the names of the photos folder and save folder you chose | So you can pick up where you left off |
| Your IP address, briefly, in memory | To limit abuse of the public chat; not stored |
We never ask for or keep your name. We don't collect your Apple Account, iCloud password, photo locations or the original file names of your photos.
In your browser only
Your browser keeps a few things on your own computer, which we never receive: your email (to fill in the sign-in form), a small thumbnail of the last photo sorted (for the "Where you left off" card), and a record of what has been sorted inside your save folder. Clearing your browser data removes the first two.
Cookies
We use one essential cookie to keep you signed in. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies, and we don't run analytics.
Who we share data with
Only the services that run Sortr, and only what each one needs:
- OpenAI: photo previews and chat messages, to sort photos and answer questions.
- Stripe: payment and card details, including the name on your card, which you enter on Stripe's own page. Sortr never receives your name.
- Render: hosts our website and database.
- Resend: sends your sign-in codes and emails.
- Google Fonts and jsDelivr: deliver the site's font and a helper for reading HEIC photos; they see your IP address when your browser loads them.
We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't share it for advertising.
How long we keep it
We keep your account information while your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from your Account page; everything is deleted immediately, except payment amounts and dates, which are kept without your email for as long as tax and accounting law requires. Stripe keeps its own payment records.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us to show you, correct or delete your information, or to close your account, by emailing hello@sortr.online. Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, UK or California), you may have more rights, such as data portability or objecting to processing, and the right to complain to your local data protection authority. We will answer within 30 days.
Legal basis (EU/UK): we use your information to provide the service you asked for (contract), to keep records the law requires (legal obligation), and to keep Sortr secure (legitimate interests).
Sensitive content
Your photos may show people, health information or adult content. Sortr never infers anyone's race, ethnicity, health, religion or sexuality from how they look. Photos are sorted from what is visible, and previews are not kept.
Children
Sortr is not for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has given us information, email us and we will delete it.
International transfers
We and our providers are based in the United States, so your information is processed there. Where the law requires, our providers use approved safeguards for transfers.
Changes
We will post any changes here and update the date above. For significant changes, we will email you.
